Coalfields & Communities during Nationalisation

Work, Community and Class in the British Coal Industry, 1947-1994

On Behalf of the People: Work, Community and Class in the British Coal Industry, 1947-1994 is an Arts & Humanities Research Council funded project led by Keith Gildart (University of Wolverhampton) and Andrew Perchard (Northumbria University), with support from researchers Ben Curtis and Grace Miller.

The project explores the nationalised industry from the coalfields up, with profiles of eight case study collieries (the Scottish one being Barony). The site includes pit profiles and clips of oral history interviews, as well as other resources. The project has run in partnership with the General Federation of Trade Unions and all three national mining museums.

Coalfield events, featuring exhibition banners, have been delayed because of the pandemic but will be held once life has become more normal, and will include an event at Auchinleck Indoor Bowling Club in Ayrshire.
